About the RMI

Observations

Producing, collecting and providing high quality observations is historically our primary activity.

How?

  • Land based observations through weather stations, radars and LIDAR
  • Observations from space through weather balloons and satellites

Why?

  • For climatological purposes:
    • Study the climate change
    • Analyze the past severe weather events
  • As input to the numerical weather prediction models for Belgium and at international level:
    • The better the observations, the better the forecasts and warnings
    • Validation of the models and fine tuning

Risks?

  • Lack of required funding from the government to maintain and improve the observational network
  • Not having the resources to take part in collaborative projects on new obervation technologies
