About the RMI
Observations
Producing, collecting and providing high quality observations is historically our primary activity.
How?
- Land based observations through weather stations, radars and LIDAR
 - Observations from space through weather balloons and satellites

Why?
- For climatological purposes:

- Study the climate change
 - Analyze the past severe weather events

 - As input to the numerical weather prediction models for Belgium and at international level:

- The better the observations, the better the forecasts and warnings
 - Validation of the models and fine tuning

Risks?
- Lack of required funding from the government to maintain and improve the observational network
 - Not having the resources to take part in collaborative projects on new obervation technologies
